Message from the Director
In August 2016, the Steen Library released its new strategic plan that will extend through the year 2023, which will mark the 50th-year anniversary of occupancy in the building named after the university’s third president, Dr. Ralph W. Steen. The final year of the plan will also mark the 100th-year anniversary of SFA, founded by the Texas State Legislature in September 18, 1923 as an open state college. The strategic plan communicates the library’s mission and vision for the transformational development of programs and services to support the broader academic mission of the university.
The Ralph W. Steen Library provides access to relevant scholarly resources and services, flexible learning spaces, and technology support to help students achieve academic success, develop critical thinking skills, and become life-long learners. The Library supports faculty, staff, and the larger academic community in the advancement of excellence in teaching, research, scholarship, creative work, service, and the preservation of the cultural and historical identities of the University and the East Texas community.
As the academic center of the University, the Ralph W. Steen Library is a gateway to information discovery, knowledge creation, and cultural preservation, fostering an atmosphere that encourages research and creativity, critical thinking, experiential learning, and collaborative partnerships.
The following seven goals will guide the implementation of the strategic plan:
Goal 1 (Transformative Student Experiences)
The library is committed to providing transformative student experiences through active and collaborative learning.
Goal 2 (Collections)
The library will procure and provide relevant collections to the SFA community.
Goal 3 (Flexible Learning Spaces)
The library will create user-centered physical and digital learning spaces for discovery and reflection to advance student achievement, faculty scholarship, and community building.
Goal 4 (Cultural and Historical Preservation)
The library will collect and preserve the cultural and historical identities of the University and the East Texas community to support teaching, learning, and research.
Goal 5 (University Scholarship)
The library will facilitate global visibility of University scholarship.
Goal 6 (Professional Development)
The library will provide lifelong learning opportunities to library faculty and staff through shared information, collaborative learning, and leadership.
Goal 7 (Marketing and Outreach)
The Library will develop communication and publicity strategies to increase connections within SFA and the surrounding communities.
