Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection was received from the Women’s Shelter of Nacogdoches. The majority of the collection is stereographs and un-mailed postcards. There are some postcards send by Marion Ellis to her family while she was in Europe in 1910-11, possibly on her honeymoon with husband, Lee Randolph, whom she married in July 15, 1910. The un-mailed European postcards were most likely collected by Evelyn Ellis during her time with the American Red Cross in France during World War I. There are also un-mailed postcards from various locations throughout the United States from the 1960s-1970s. Folder 3 contains a letter written to Anna McDougal from Wm. Cadington in 1873, around the time of her marriage.

Collection Historical Note

Evelyn L. Ellis was born on August 19, 1892 in Lompoc, Santa Barbara, California to Frank and Annie McDougal Ellis. Evelyn attended Stanford University and graduated in 1914. When Ellis applied for her passport in 1918, she listed her occupation as a teacher living in San Francisco. Evelyn spent about a year in the American Red Cross during World War I, serving in France from 1918 until the end of the war. While there, she met Carl Cope Morgan, a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army. They married at wars end and settled in Uniontown, Alabama. Evelyn and Carl had two known children, Carl Jr. and Lewis.

Carl Jr. served as a combat officer in World War II and as a colonel in the Alabama National Guard. During his lifetime he was mayor and city council president of Selma, Alabama. Concurrent with his civil activities, Carl Jr. also operated a successful farm implement business, Morgan’s Black Belt Tractor Co. His company had locations in Selma and Nacogdoches. After the passing of his wife, Carl Jr. relocated to Nacogdoches to be with close friends. He died in Nacogdoches on May 4, 2006.
