Scope and Contents of the Materials

The McFarland-Russell family papers consist of personal and business correspondence, legal and business papers, Confederacy related items, materials related to the history of Orange, Texas, and a large amount of material of personal and genealogical interest produced and collected by members of these two East Texas families.

Collection Historical Note

Both the McFarland and the Russell families have their roots in early East Texas. In 1871, the two families came together with the marriage of Robert Everett Russell (b. Oct. 10, 1847, d. May 24, 1922) and Catherine Christine McFarland (b. July 2, 1849, d. Oct. 17, 1888), the daughter of Thomas S. McFarland. (Brinley, Lorine. Orange County Texas Cemetery Inscriptions, v.1. Houston: L.
