Collection Historical Note

During World War II, Captain William D. Murdy served with the U. S. Army, 3rd (later became 2831st) Battalion, 40th Engineer Combat Regiment, as Company Commander from August 1944-May 1945. The company operated both in France and Germany. Murdy kept a journal of the activities of the company in which he included periodic reports of work accomplished, recommendations for awards, statements of the history of his company, commendations, some correspondence, and other military reports and orders. He took and collected photographs of work done, military equipment and machinery, members of the company, war damages, and historic sites. Also included were photos taken at Dachau Concentration Camp.
