Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of original documents and research materials collected by Mary Martha Hackney on the Ingraham family of Nacogdoches County, the Blount family of San Augustine County, the Gough family and other families connected to them including the B. F. Prices, Landons, and Tuckers. The collection contains photocopies, carbons, typescripts, and original manuscript materials.

Collection Historical Note

Judge George Frances Ingraham served both as county judge of Nacogdoches County and district judge. He was born in New York on Jan. 15, 1842 to Francis and Elcee Anne Gough Ingraham, and his family was in Nacogdoches by 1860. He fought with Company G, 8th Texas Infantry during the Civil War. On Oct. 21, 1866, he married Martha Thompson Cooper and they had nine children: Francis Lafayette, George Cornelius, Eva Alma (m. Smith), Fritz Hoya, Elcee Rosina (m. Tucker), Martha P. (m. Staber), Payton S. Wilton Porter (m. Willie Blount Ingraham), and Jessie N. George Ingraham died April 27, 1920, in Nacogdoches. Ingraham's cousin, Mary Gough, was the adopted daughter of his uncle, Commodore Sidney Gough, and her papers are also included in the collection.

Stephen William Blount was born in Georgia on February 13, 1808 and moved to San Augustine, Texas in 1835. He was elected in 1836 to represent San Augustine Municipality at the Constitutional Convention, and was a signer of the Texas declaration of Independence. Blount was the first county clerk of San Augustine County and postmaster from 1846 to 1849. He served as a Confederate fiscal agent during the Civil War and a member of the Redland Masonic Lodge #3. Stephen Blount married Mary M. Landon Lacy on February 4, 1839 and they had six children: Thomas William, Elizabeth Jane (m. 1st Webb, 2nd Holmes), James Jones, Mary Landon (m. Thomas), Eliza Frances, Edward Augustus, Emma Eugenie (m. Shindler) and Stephen William, Jr. S. W. Blount died February 7, 1890.
