Collection Historical Note

Mary E. Moore, daughter of John C. and Elizabeth Beckham Moore, was born in Pontotoc County, Mississippi in 1860. She married Ziba H. Hazen in 1879 and they moved to Nacogdoches County sometime between 1883 and 1895. Their son Chester Orr Hazen was born in Mississippi on August 22, 1883, and Dillard B. Hazen was born in Garrison, Texas on December 7, 1895. Ziba H. Hazen served in Company G of the 130th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers during the Civil War. After he died on November 20, 1896, his wife applied for a Widows with Minors Pension from the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Pensions. Mary Moore Hazen died in Press, Texas on December 28, 1942.

The Hazen boys attended school at Mt. Horeb (later called Press), about two miles south of Nacogdoches. They also received mail through the Decoy post office, about one mile southwest of Press, and farmed land in that area. Chester married Lillie Pearl Faires, and they remained in Nacogdoches County. Dillard served in France during World War I, and married Mary Crawford on March 25, 1920. Dillard worked for the Customs Service and they lived in Port Arthur until he retired in 1958. Dillard returned to Nacogdoches for a few years, then moved to Pasadena, where he remained until his death on January 19, 1973.
