Scope and Contents of the Materials

The papers in this collection consist of original documents and letters and other materials collected and produced by Jimmie Willis Hanks (granddaughter of J. T. Bogard) of Center, Texas and Irene Bogard Winton of Beaumont, Texas, while working on family history. Family lines researched include those of Hanks, Bogard, Burleson, Miller, Hartsfield, Barfield, and Shipp. There is a small amount of material on the Key and Hyde families. Mrs. Hanks incorporated the files of Mrs. Winton into hers and the entire collection was eventually placed here. Because most of the families are interrelated, a file chiefly pertaining to one branch will often include material on other branches.

Collection Historical Note

James 'Jim' Thompson Bogard born in 1848, was a son of Cornelius and Caroline M. (Burleson) Bogard, who settled in Shelby County, Texas in 1844. He had a mercantile business in Timpson, Texas around 1889, and farmed throughout his adult life. Jim Bogard was appointed Shelby County Commissioner in 1896, and was a representative to the Texas Legislature from 1907 to 1909. There, he was actively involved in promoting a bill which built the Sante Fe railroad from Center to Carthage, thus giving connection with Longview and the Port of Beaumont. He was the author of several bills, including one which prohibited the use of intoxicating liquors in Shelby County, and one prohibiting liquor on any kind of passenger vehicle. Mr. Bogard died in 1930 and is buried at New Prospect Methodist Church Cemetery in Shelby County. (Hanks, Jimmie Willis. "Bogard and Burleson Families." History of Shelby County Texas.
