Russell Also included are photographs, various mementos, newspaper clippings, and other family materials collected by Josephine Russell, daughter of Clara Cronkrite and A. T. Russell.

Collection Historical Note

Courtship letters exchanged by A. T. Russell and his future wife, Clara Cronkrite, make up the bulk of this collection. Also included in the collection are other personal and business letters, business and legal papers and family photographs. The papers, which range from 1874-1978, are chiefly associated with Nacogdoches, Lufkin, Chireno and Austin.

The chief persons associated with the papers are A. T. Russell and Clara Cronkrite. A. T. Russell received his law degree in 1903 from the University of Texas. From 1906 to 1910, he served as Attorney for Nacogdoches County. He was also, for a short period, a member of the Texas House of Representatives and served as Nacogdoches County Judge from 1923-1926. Clara Cronkrite came from a Chireno family. She taught school in Lufkin before her marriage. Mrs. Cronkrite, Clara's mother, kept a boarding house in Nacogdoches where A. T. Russell stayed. Various other family members are associated with the papers.
