Letters to Mary S. Fenley Whitaker from Nacogdoches County Confederate soldiers John P. Whitaker, John Broughton Fenley, and William Henry Fenley relating war experiences, camp conditions, and family matters while the men were serving in Louisiana and Arkansas.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection contains three letters from Mary's brother William Henry Fenley and one from her brother John Broughton Fenley. John (1838-1916) and William (1843-1879) were born in Georgia, sons of Charles Henderson and Nancy Broughton Fenley. Both brothers were farmers. Although they did not serve in the same company as John P. Whitaker, they were close enough to obtain news from one another while in Louisiana and Arkansas.
