Collection Historical Note

The name Herrera first appears on the Spanish census records for Nacogdoches in 1806. Miguel and Manuel Herrera, who are listed as heads of households in the 1830 census, both participated in the Cordova Rebellion of 1838 against the Republic of Texas.

Jose Herrera, born about 1834, was a farmer. He fought in the Civil War in Company B of the 3rd Brigade of the Texas State Troops. His wife's name was Manuela Flores and they had at least two daughters, Telisfora and Mary. In 1871 Jose received a land grant for 160 acres, signed by Gov. Richard Bennett Hubbard, for a tract on the "Mountain" [also called Cherry Ridge] 13.5 miles east of Nacogdoches.

Manuel Herrera, born Oct. 17, 1877, continued to hold land in the grant. He married Mandy Cordova, who was born on January 1, 1888. They had one son named Robert, and six daughters: Beulah (m. Falcon), Claudia, Eulah (m. Y'Barbo), Cora (m. Y'Barbo), and two others. Mandy Herrera died on May 19, 1932 and Manuel died on September 24, 1943.

Robert Herrera was born on February 10, 1914. He was a farmer who married Verna Pascal [?] on June 12, 1937. Their children were Betty R. (m. McClelland) and Manuel. Robert was a resident of Martinsville when he died in a Galveston hospital on June 15, 1967.
