Collection Historical Note

On September 26, 1939 a group of SFA faculty women and wives of faculty men met at the College Cafeteria to organize the Women's Faculty Club. Two preliminary meetings had been held during the summer, and of 76 women initially invited, 33 were present at the organizational meeting and gave their names for membership.

The purpose of the club was social and activities included bridge, dominoes, bingo, basketball, darts, shuffleboard, and other games. Refreshments were always served at the meetings, which later also included lectures, book reviews, and slide shows of travel experiences. During World War II the club joined in homefront activities such as knitting and sewing for the Red Cross, and first aid training. They began to participate in civic causes such as the restoration of the Old Nacogdoches University Building, staffing the Hoya Memorial Library, sponsoring signs to advertise the university, and granting scholarships to worthy students. The fashion show became an annual event, and talent shows, dinner theater parties, tasting teas, and picnics have been included among club activities.

By the late 1970's membership had swelled to 275, with interest groups for bridge, needlecrafts, book reviews, and physical exercise. The name was changed to University Women's Club about 1975. About 1983, the University Professional Women's Club was organized exclusively for SFA faculty women and staff.
