Library Services for Alumni Association Members

Alumni Services

Stephen F. Austin State University offers alumni access to the collections and resources of Steen Library. See the campus map to find us.

When visiting the library, alumni have access to a range of resources and services. Please contact your Research & Instructional Services (RIS) librarian for your information needs.

  • Obtain research assistance with a RIS librarian Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Apply for an alumni library card to check out library materials.
  • Review the list of electronic resources available to alumni both onsite and offsite. Additional licensed electronic resources are only available onsite.
  • Members of the Alumni Association will be assigned an alumni account which can be used on any public station in the building. Patrons must present an Alumni Association member card to qualify for an alumni account. For more information about guest accounts for alumni, please see



Call or email a RIS Librarian from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday for personalized research assistance.


Alumni Library Card

SFA alumni can apply for a free library card to check out materials from Steen Library and Nacogdoches Public Library.

  • Apply for a library card in-person at the Circulation Desk.
  • Present an alumni card along with a picture ID card when applying.
  • Check out up to 99 books at a time.
    • Circulating Books Loan Period: 21 days
    • Audio-Visual Materials Loan Period: 7 days

Book delivery service is not available. Your RIS librarian will work with you to use your local public or academic library to obtain the items you need if you live outside of the local area. Please contact Circulation Services at (936) 468-1497 with questions about borrowing and lending.

ChemIDPlus Advanced Provides access to structure and nomenclature authority files used for the identification of chemical substances cited in National Library of Medicine (NLM) databases, including the TOXNET system.

Clinical Trials Provides regularly updated information about federally and privately supported clinical research in human volunteers. Produced by the National Library of Medicine.


ERIC-Education Resources Information Center Education-related resources, both journal and non-journal literature--some available in full-text format.

Digital Archives and Collections A digital gateway to historical, cultural and scientific resources from Texas and Mexico which includes photographs, scanned documents and artifacts, video, etc., which are accompanied by curriculum material.

Government Documents Patient education information for all types of cancer including screening, testing, treatment, and support service information.

Federal Register

HazMap An occupational disease database containing hazardous chemical information and job related diseases. Developed by the Specialized Information Service of the National Library of Medicine.

National Guideline Clearinghouse A public resource for evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. NGC is an initiative of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

PubMed A database from the U.S. National Library of Medicine that includes over 16 million citations from MEDLINE and other life science journals for biomedical articles back to the 1950s.

Thomas In the spirit of Thomas Jefferson, legislative information from the Library of Congress that includes: Congressional roll call votes, bills and resolutions, Congressional Record, reports, etc.

U. S. Patent and Trademark Office Provides full-text of registered patents and trademarks, including search aids, a browsable collection of recent patents, and special notices.

BioMed Central An independent publishing house committed to providing immediate open access to peer-reviewed biomedical research.

Directory of Open Access Journals Access to over 4,000 free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals.

PLoS Open access journals provided by a non-profit organizational of scientists committed to making the world's scientific literature a free public resource.

PubMed Central The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature.



PubMed The National Library of Medicine's search service with access to 9 million citations in MEDLINE and Pre-MEDLINE.

Patient Education Tools

American Heart Association Patient education materials describing heart attack and stroke warning signs, descriptions of various heart diseases and conditions, diet, nutrition and preventive measures to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease. Patient education materials from the National Library of Medicine. Includes a medical encyclopedia, drug dictionary, patient education handouts, and online slide shows describing common diagnostic procedures and exams.

National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse Diabetes education materials including resources describing etiology, prevention and control.


Agricola As the catalog and index to the collections of the National Agricultural Library, this resource lists citations for materials in the fields of agriculture and related disciplines with many links to full-text documents.

PubChem Database of chemical structures of small organic molecules and information on their biological activities.

Scirus Scientific research tool that allows searching for journal content, as well as web pages, courseware, patents, institutional repositories, etc.
