General Databases

Academic Search Complete (EBSCO) is a multidisciplinary index giving access to articles in over 8,000 journals with many available in full-text.

Dissertations & Theses (ProQuest) includes bibliographic citations for dissertations and theses worldwide, from 1861 to the present, with full-text access available for the newer titles, and abstracts available for the older titles.

Expanded Academic ASAP (Gale Cengage Learning) is a general database with indexing for journal, magazine and newspaper articles, with many of the articles available full-text.

*Google Scholar provides a search of scholarly literature across many disciplines and sources, including theses, books, abstracts and articles.

*Opposing Viewpoints in Context (Gale Cengage Learning) is a resource that utilizes many different sources to provide information on both sides of controversial topics.

*Biography in Context (Gale Cengage Learning) is a full-text database of biographical information on people throughout history.

*Fine Arts and Music Collection (Gale Cengage Learning) offers more than 100 full-text journals and magazines, providing resources in drama, music, art history, and filmmaking.

*Classical Music Library is a streaming recorded music database for listening and study.

*International Index to Music Periodicals (ProQuest) covers music in journals, from more than 20, countries with some full-text articles provided.

Musicians and Composers of the 20th Century The online equivalent to the 5 volume print set. It contains biographical and critical essays on those who made an impact on music, from 1901 to 2000, and includes photos, illustrations and graphs.

Naxos--A comprehensive music website complete with composer biographies and online listening; SFASU students and faculty can create their own playlists. 

RILM Abstracts of Music Literature (EBSCO) provides abstracts to over 500 scholarly journals, as well as books, dissertations, bibliographies, conference proceedings, etc. in the field of music.

Song Index Provides access to citations for about 50,000 songs in more than 1,400 published song anthologies.

Doctoral Dissertations in Musicology-Online

National Jukebox
Straight from the Library of Congress (LOC) is this collection of more than 10,000 historical sound recordings from the Victor Talking Machine Company, made between 1901 and 1925, with additional content to be increased regularly. These are available free of charge.

This site, touted as “The World's Leading Classical Music Label,” allows searching of the site to read the biographies of composers and artists, and then listen to their music online.
